MARCEL WANDERS DESIGN STUDIO – MEETING A DUTCH MASTER OF DESIGN
In Marcel Wanders’ design studio, life-sized stallions become standard lamps, chairs, giant mushrooms and even a dog are recreated in crochet and weirdly sculptural forms are modeled from, erm well … snot, basically.
Wanders studio in central Amsterdam is an inspirational place, where free rein is given to designers to create beautiful objects. Form no longer follows function; it’s all a lot more interesting than that. We had the good fortune to visit and film at the Studio for Wanders’ client Graham & Brown.
Behind the unassumingly conventional façade, in a quiet street just a few minutes walk from the Ann Frank House, is a place where truly ground-breaking creative work is done.
It was a bit like dropping in at the workplace of international design’s answer to Willy Wonka. All was impressively thorough, totally professional – and wildly imaginative, like nothing you’ve ever seen before. We loved it. After all, it’s not every day you get to talk to a genius about what inspires and motivates him. The results are fresh, insightful and just about as far from any outdated preconceptions about wallpaper you could possibly get. Through Graham & Brown everyone can now have an original Marcel Wanders design to enhance their home; maybe it’s time what you put on the wall was a little more off the wall.
