Birkenstock – Cool Art Collaboration

Californian graffiti artist and illustrator Aaron De La Cruz was commissioned by Birkenstock and 55DSL to create a limited edition range of classic Birks sandals using paint spatters. The project was curated by legendary LA art magazine Arkitip through international agency Vice.

So when they needed an original way to trail the project they contacted us for a little high-speed magic. We shot two pieces, a teaser and product reveal over several December and January days in the dark confines of an industrial work space in South Manchester. The results are unique and compellingly beautiful. Individual droplets and splashes filmed at up to 1000 fps create weirdly unpredictable but wonderful effects. It’s more Art than Science, but the advanced technology to shoot things this slow and the expertise to make it all happen on time and to budget are definitely scientific.
